Telluride Colorado

As Chris and I drove through the mountains for another weekend get away, I felt blessed. Blessed to have someone to share these mini adventures with and blessed to live in such a beautiful state.

Our weekend getaway this time took us to Telluride Colorado for a family friends wedding. This worked out well for us since neither of us had ever been to Telluride. What a special treat for us!

One of the reasons we have not ventured to Telluride before, it is not the easiest location to access from Northern Colorado. However, it is well worth the effort once you arrive in Telluride. It took us a little over 7 hours to drive from Fort Collins to Telluride. This was during the summer so in the winter the drive time can increase dramatically!!! On our way we drove over the mountains on I-70 and then dropped down through Grand Junction.

The mountains around Telluride are breath taking so we put the top down on the convertible to enjoy the views and the fresh mountain air. Driving through the mountains in a convertible is perfect. I highly recommend it!

The hotel we stayed in was located in downtown Telluride right next to the ski slopes and gondola that goes to the top of the mountain. I am not always one to stay in town because the hotels can be a bit expensive.  However, I do recommend that visitors stay in downtown Telluride. It is worth the extra money and will allow for walk ability to everything. We did not use our car one time over the weekend, it was wonderful.

Telluride is an old mining town with Victorian influences, the commitment to keeping the historic feeling is evident. The town has an historic quaintness which is the perfect getaway for me. I love to be able to decompress when going to the mountains.

There are endless outdoor activities in Telluride. Visitors can go mountain biking on the ski hill, fishing in the streams, and hiking on the numerous trails. Once the snow falls Telluride becomes a winter wonderland full of skiing activities and more.

Since we were in Telluride for a wedding most of our time was filled, but we did enjoy walking around the town. Admiring the architecture, shops, galleries, and restaurants. The next time we are able to go back we will have a few hikes planned.

The gondola which was directly next to our hotel is free during the summer months, I am not sure about the ski season since it takes visitors up onto the ski mountain. Chris and I did jump on for a ride to the top of the mountain and down into the main base area of the Telluride Ski Resort. The ride took about 10 minutes and was well worth every minute. As the gondola proceeded up the mountainside the view were expansive. The interior valley and surrounding mountains were visible for miles upon miles.

Once we arrived at the Telluride Ski Base, there were people riding mountain bikes, climbing the ropes course, eating lunch, and absolutely enjoying their time.

We were hungry so lunch was on the agenda for us. Chris and I sat on the patio of Tomboy Tavern for a drink and a bit to eat. If there is ever an opportunity to sit outside, I always do! The patio offered wonderful views of the mountain and we were right in the middle of all the activity. As we sat there, we were able to watch the mountain bikers travel down the mountain and then proceed back up on the ski lift. The patio had live music, great drinks, wonderful food, and good service. It was a win win.

Once our tummies were full, it was time to walk. The base is all covered with brick patios and walking paths which make it easy to navigate. There are condos, hotels, shops and restaurants. In the winter there is also an outdoor ice-skating rink. Throughout the area there are places to sit and fire pits to warm up by. It feels like walking around a ski area in Europe. The area is high end and yet has that special Colorado welcoming atmosphere.

Every time we visit a Colorado Ski Resort during the summer all I can think about is coming back to go skiing. I can’t wait to come back again, in the winter to enjoy the slopes. Skiing is my true passion!

Although our trip to Telluride was quick since we had to get back to Fort Collins for work, we had a wonderful time. The town is super cute and the mountains are majestic. Both of us are looking forward to our next trip back to Telluride. It will probably be during the winter months so we can hit the slops.

Live the life you want to live, go on an adventure!
