There are many wonderful places to visit in Colorado. One of our favorite spots to escape to is Glenwood Springs. Glenwood in about 200 miles from Fort Collins just off of I-70 and it takes about 3 1/2 hours to drive there. The drive is through the mountains on I-70 and I think it is absolutely beautiful. I love driving over Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass, then through Glenwood Springs Canyon. The Canyon is one of the most awe inspiring canyons I have ever seen.
Once in Glenwood the possibilities for the getaway are endless from hiking, rafting, fishing, shopping, an adventure park, and more. For this weekend getaway we chose, a relaxing overnight stay which included an afternoon at the hot springs.
There are multiple hot spring locations in the area, we chose to spend the day at Iron Mountain Hot Springs. The hot springs resort sits on the side of the Colorado River with views of the surrounding mountains.
The entrance is a Lodge-Style Bath House, which contains the check in area, a little shop, and the locker rooms for changing. Once outside there are 16 naturally-shaped geothermal pools at different temperatures for guest to relax in. The paths between the pools are heated to keep them free of snow and ice during the winter months. The geothermal pools are located on a terraced hillside to allow each pool its own distinct views. On the terraced areas, there are also lounge chairs and umbrellas for guest to enjoy.
In addition to the smaller pools, there is a large family pool for swimming and splashing around in. Located at the family pool is an over sized jetted tub and grassy picnic area. Iron Mountain Hot Springs does not allow for outside food or drinks, however, there is a restaurant on site. The restaurant provides multiple options for food and drinks including alcoholic drinks.
For us, the hot springs is typically an afternoon adventure. Once we have finished up we then head to the hotel. Our absolute favorite place to stay is The Denver Hotel. The hotel is located in the historic downtown of Glenwood Springs. Many of the rooms provided views overlooking The Colorado River. We enjoy stepping back in time when we stay here. The Denver Hotel was built in 1915 and is family owned and operated. The hotel embraces its history, old world styling, and classic hospitality. The rooms are quaint, inviting, and the beds are quite comfy. The location is perfect and allows guest to walk around the historic downtown area, while enjoying many options for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Attached to The Denver Hotel is The Glenwood Canyon Brewpub. Our family has enjoyed many a meal at this establishment, the menu has something to offer for everyone.
I have just barely skimmed the surface on all Glenwood Springs has to offer. Each time we visit, we always find something new to do including, great food to eat and many options for new adventures. I highly recommend a weekend trip to Glenwood, the possibilities are endless.
